Pro-life in thought and deed

Pro-life in thought and deed

I am pro-life. Recent polling says I am part of a slim majority in this country that also calls itself pro-life. This is a very encouraging development. It is hard for me to understand how anyone could support the abortion of innocent, completely helpless, human beings simply because they are considered inconvenient.

Listen to the audio of this commentary here.

Make no mistake about that. An unborn baby is a human being. From the moment a woman’s egg is fertilized, a new human being comes into existence. The only difference between him or her and you or me is time. Given time, that unborn human being will look like every other human being. After all, what else could he or she be? Modern medicine, including ultrasound technology, has settled this question.

As a member of the human race, that unborn baby has a right to life and deserves to be protected by law. There are many reasons for this. First, the Bible says God is personally involved in the creation of human life. In Psalm 139, David declared that God knit him together in his mother’s womb. He was no accident; the Creator of life had a plan for his life. I believe God has a plan for every life. Whether or not a person has a chance to fulfill that plan should be his or her choice not the mother’s.

Then there is the whole matter of the rights of the unborn child. Every human should be granted the same protections of the law. Yet, sadly, that is not the case. Today, an unborn child in this country has no legal protections from a mother who does not want him or her. Strangely, a person can be convicted of two murders for killing a pregnant woman, but it is perfectly legal for that same pregnant woman to kill that same unborn person herself.

Human decency also compels me to seek to protect the life of the unborn. We say a lot about what matters to us by how we treat these unborn people. A truly civilized society would never condone the destruction of the most innocent and vulnerable among us. Yet, in our country, an unborn baby is completely at the mercy of a single person’s decision. And when mercy matters most, we are told that unborn baby doesn’t have any rights unless the mother decides it does. That is not the mark of a truly civilized people. Someone must be an advocate for the unborn. If the mother won’t, then society should. It’s the only acceptable response if we are truly to be a decent, honorable people.
